Electric Vehicle Working Group
The Electric Vehicle Working Group (EVWG) views sustainability as a central goal of its work. The group recognizes that the transportation sector is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, and that electric vehicles (EVs) offer a significant opportunity to reduce emissions and improve air quality.
The EVWG is working to advance sustainability in the transportation sector by:
- Promoting the adoption of EVs in the United States
- Supporting the development and deployment of charging infrastructure
- Ensuring that the electric grid is ready to support a growing number of EVs
- Addressing the equity and workforce impacts of the transition to EVs
The EVWG believes that EVs are essential to building a more sustainable transportation system. The group's recommendations are expected to help the United States achieve its goal of becoming a global leader in the development and deployment of EVs.
Here are some specific examples of the EVWG's actions to advance sustainability:
- The group is working to develop a national EV charging infrastructure plan.
- The EVWG is also working to promote EV adoption through public awareness campaigns and financial incentives.
- The group is also working to ensure that the electric grid is ready to support a growing number of EVs by developing new technologies and grid modernization strategies.
- The EVWG is also working to address the equity and workforce impacts of the transition to EVs by ensuring that everyone has access to affordable EVs and charging infrastructure, and by supporting job training programs for the EV industry.
The EVWG's commitment to sustainability is essential to building a cleaner, more equitable, and more resilient transportation system for all Americans.
The Electric Vehicle Working Group (EVWG) was established by the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation in June 2022 to make recommendations to the Secretaries of Energy and Transportation regarding the development, adoption, and integration of light-, medium-, and heavy-duty electric vehicles (EVs) into the transportation and energy systems of the United States.
The EVWG is composed of 25 members from federal agencies, the automotive industry, the energy industry, state and local governments, labor organizations, and the property development industry. The group is co-chaired by the Deputy Secretary of Energy and the Deputy Secretary of Transportation.
The EVWG's mission is to provide recommendations on how to:
- Accelerate the adoption of EVs in the United States
- Develop and deploy the necessary charging infrastructure
- Ensure that the electric grid is ready to support a growing number of EVs
- Address the equity and workforce impacts of the transition to EVs
The EVWG is holding a series of public meetings to gather input from stakeholders. The group is expected to submit its final report to the Secretaries of Energy and Transportation in 2024.
The EVWG's work is important because EVs play a key role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality. EVs also offer a number of economic benefits, such as creating jobs and reducing fuel costs for consumers.
The EVWG's recommendations are expected to help the United States achieve its goal of becoming a global leader in the development and deployment of EVs.
