Stylish Electric Vehicle Concept

A technology startup, based in the Philadelphia suburbs, is envisioning an expansive national infrastructure for wireless charging of large electric vehicles.

InductEV, previously recognized as Momentum Dynamics, has recently established a state-of-the-art research and development facility at its expansive 50,000-square-foot headquarters in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania.

Over the past decade, the startup has successfully provided wireless charging devices to a wide range of vehicle fleet owners, including manufacturers and public transportation operators. Notable clients in their portfolio include Volvo and Martha’s Vineyard Transit Authority.

Established in 2009, InductEV has experienced significant growth, now boasting a team of 65 dedicated professionals. Its groundbreaking technology has already made its mark in 20 distinct locations across North America and Europe, with plans underway for expansion into Asia.

InductEV's cutting-edge technology utilizes a magnetic transmitter and receptor, surpassing the power of a smartphone wireless charger by an impressive factor of 7,500. This innovative solution comprises one device affixed to the underside of large electric vehicles such as buses or trucks, complemented by another device embedded within the pavement.

“It allows us to transmit electrons to the vehicle so the battery can receive it,” said Barry Libert, CEO and board chairman of InductEV. “No different than your phone.”

The wireless charging pad eliminates the need for buses to make stops. Instead, vehicles can effortlessly charge while following their regular routes, providing a significant advantage to public transit operators.

“What they’re finding is that they want to run the routes continuously in a closed loop,” Libert said. “They don’t want to [stop] to plug those vehicles in because they are expensive.”

InductEV has entered into a strategic partnership agreement with ChargePoint, a prominent operator of wired electric vehicle charging stations nationwide. The goal of this collaboration is to accelerate the adoption of wireless charging stations. With a current investment capital exceeding $100 million and recent undisclosed fundraising round closure, the company is poised for further expansion. One area of focus is the development of infrastructure, particularly microgrids. In addition to their innovative devices, InductEV offers fleet operators route optimization software powered by artificial intelligence, enabling them to achieve significant reductions in operational costs.

“We’re about to go to a very large round for infrastructure financing,” he said. “Instead of wireless carriers for your phone, think about wireless carriers for your energy. So we’re building out wireless microgrids across the nation.”

As we stand on the brink of an electric revolution, InductEV's pioneering technology and strategic partnerships are poised to reshape the landscape of electric vehicle infrastructure. The company's innovative approach to wireless charging and route optimization holds the potential to significantly enhance vehicle efficiency and revolutionize the transportation sector. With continued investment and expansion on the horizon, InductEV is well-positioned to lead the charge toward a greener and more sustainable future, making electric vehicles a practical and accessible choice for operators across the globe.
