EV solid state battery graphical concept

The invention of an oxygen-ion battery, QuantumScape's hedging of EV battery tech, and NIO to launch solid-state battery. Read on to learn more about the latest in EV battery technology news.

A new type of battery has been invented by scientists called the Oxygen-Ion Battery

A new type of battery called the oxygen-ion battery has been created by researchers from TU Wien in Vienna, reports SciTechDaily in a news article appearing on its website today. This battery is highly durable, does not require rare elements, and solves the safety issue of fire hazards.

Although lithium-ion batteries are widely used in various devices such as smartphones and electric vehicles, they may not be the best option for every application. However, researchers at TU Wien have developed an oxygen-ion battery that has several notable benefits. Although it may not have the same energy density as lithium-ion batteries, it has a long lifespan because its storage capacity can be regenerated without irreversible deterioration over time.

Is QuantumScape hedging its bets on battery technology?

QuantumScape is pursuing a highly ambitious goal in the field of battery-materials science that has remained unattainable for many years, and they have been discussing their potential achievements for some time now, reports an article posted on Bloomberg Hyperdrive earlier this week. The battery startup supported by Volkswagen is currently seeking customers in the consumer electronics sector as they tackle manufacturing difficulties, perhaps in an effort to hedge its bet on electric vehicle technology.

The startup has developed solid-state battery technology for electric vehicles. This technology promises to deliver a significantly greater range and faster charging times as short as 15 minutes. The startup was spun off from Stanford University in 2010 and as it was going public a decade later, automakers showed interest, and investors were eager to invest.

NIO may introduce electric vehicles with solid-state batteries by end of year

According to a recent filing, NIO might offer improved batteries from WeLion, a supplier of semi-solid-state batteries, in the near future. Though it may seem unlikely at first glance, writes Steven Loveday for the website InsideEVs.

NIO will be upgrading the batteries in some of its electric vehicles soon, according to information from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, writes Loveday. The batteries will be sourced from a semi-solid-state battery supplier, Loveday writes.

Battery technology is constantly evolving and improving to meet the needs of consumers. The invention of an oxygen-ion battery, QuantumScape's hedging of EV battery tech, and NIO's potential introduction of electric vehicles with solid-state batteries in 2021 are all signs that the industry is making significant strides in developing more efficient and powerful batteries. As technology improves, so too will the performance of battery-powered devices and vehicles, providing us with greater convenience, reliability, and safety.

It is clear that there are many exciting developments happening in battery technology, and we can look forward to seeing how these advancements continue to improve our lives in the years ahead. Check back daily for more sustainability transportation news from Mobile Gnosis.
